Whose Problem Does it Solve? - Story From: Recent Ideas

At yesterday’s Cloud Connect event in Santa Clara, an on-stage shoot-out pitted (among other) Appirio’s Social PS Enterprise against the CloudSwitch tool for porting applications to virtual environments. The outcome was predictable: CloudSwitch unashamedly appealed to the Clarke’s Third Law meme that it’s good to be indistinguishable from magic.

What seemed to me a necessary caveat was this: if the CloudSwitch magic does actually migrate the application, with all its attendant stack, up into the cloud with a simple drag and drop, what do you have? Well, you have everything you hated about the way you do IT now. You have issues of software stack maintenance, security patches, vendor updates, and the chance that any developer of any piece of any application may break your security model with a shortcut or a mistake.

I aspire to something more: to unified trust models with dramatic ease of enterprise integration, to radical improvement of developer productivity, and to letting someone else worry about a whole lot of things that have to be done right — but create no new business value by doing them.

It seemed to me that Appirio was in the position of demonstrating Excel to programmers, while CloudSwitch was showing them Visual Basic. The room full of clouderati at Cloud Connect could easily see that CloudSwitch was solving a problem that they, themselves, had: how do they get their companies into the cloud Right About Now? While Appirio was solving the end user’s problem: how do they collaborate better and tie their information and actions together in real time, without spending a whole bunch of time and money to do it?

When you’re looking at cloud propositions, make sure you’re thinking about the problem that’s most worth solving.
