7 Ways for Email to Land in Spam Folders - Story From: Infusionsoft Blog

7 Ways for Email to Land in Spam FoldersEmail deliverability is a top concern among entrepreneurs who use email marketing in their business. After all, what good is email marketing if messages go to the Spam folder? At Infusionsoft, we take email deliverability seriously and want to share seven sure-fire ways to have your message land in the junk folder. Learn from these examples and don’t do them if you expect to have your message in the Inbox.

It’s a good idea to explain why messages get caught by spam filters. Today, spam filters are smarter and are much more adaptive to their users’ interests. Gone are the days of obfuscating words to get around them and there are at least a couple barriers to find your way to their inbox.

(We’ll post the path email takes to get to the inbox soon. Stay tuned!)

With no further ado, here are 7 sure-fire ways to land your message in the spam folder:

1. USE ALL CAPS!

Legitimate email marketers know to not use CAPS because not only being unprofessional, but it also triggers spam filters. To land in the Spam folder consistently, USE ALL CAPS IN THE SUBJECT LINE AND THE BODY. Excessive punctuation also helps!!!

2. Pictures tell a thousand words (in the Spam folder)

Why bother with text when you can send a picture with the text on it? After all, people have to see the pictures first to see the text. Besides, pictures just look cooler.

3. Use periods to trick Spam folders (F.r.e.e, Sa.le, B.u.y N.OW)…

Obfuscated words are the most common reason why messages find their way to the spam folder. Professional email marketers are missing out this hot new trick.

4. Send once, send many!

Once you sent your first email and no one complained too loudly, keep sending more. None of your messages are spam or junk to anyone, so fire up that three-emails-a-week campaign and let ‘er rip.

5. Buy a “double-opt in” list.

People wouldn’t have signed up if they didn’t want your offers. Double-opt-in lists are cheap and you can grow your list for about two cents each. This is a great way to not only land in the spam folder, but to find the nearest jail.

6. Assume.

People want to buy your stuff. Don’t waste this opportunity on checking their level of interest or providing them helpful details. Never second guess on sending an email to them – they want it … in their spam folder. You know what assume means, right?

7. Never Confirm Your Opt-Ins.

It’s a well known fact that nobody confirms their opt-ins, so why bother? Have people opt in once and use that as your ticket to sending them limitless emails promoting your business. Spam folders love single-opt-in email messages.

Obviously, this advice isn’t what we recommend you do. Doing all or some of the above actions will more frequently land your message in the spam folder. (If you want that, cool.) These examples might seem obvious to you, but you have no idea how many times we’ve seen these in practice.

Email Marketing 2.0 isn’t about figuring out which words, hacks or shenanigans get past spam filters. You’d know this if you read our Email Marketing 2.0 report. However, even the best email marketer makes mistakes and we hope this helps you so you don’t repeat them.

Now, you might be wondering why even legitimate messages don’t make it in the spam folder. I’ll cover that’s next on the blog. Stay tuned – subscribe to be notified of upcoming posts.
