Cloud Computing Adoption Rapidly Accelerates in US, State Governments - Story From: Popular Ideas

Posted by Phil Novack on behalf of Dan Burton, Senior Vice President, Global Public Policy

Each week lately brings exciting news of how government at all levels is adopting enterprise cloud computing to cut costs and improve quality of service. When I first blogged about the SaaS/GOV: Government Embraces Cloud Computing conference last month, I didn’t anticipate the notable progress in cloud computing adoption that we would see just a few weeks later.

Vivek Kundra, CIO of the US federal government, recently blogged that Recovery.gov is now running on the Amazon platform and that the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is using salesforce.com technologies to help implement electronic health records, highlighting how the Obama Administration is "walking the walk" when it comes to cloud computing. Mr. Kundra has long cited the savings and service improvement benefits of shifting federal IT projects to the cloud. Now we are beginning to see him implement that vision, and it's impressive.  The cloud computing deployments at Recovery.gov and HHS illustrate that even government-wide production systems can successfully leverage the low-cost, massive scale, proven security, and heightened efficiency that cloud computing enables. These deployments bring the federal government one step closer not only to closing the technology gap with the private sector, but also to providing the kinds of services that the American public has come to expect.

But that's not all. In his May 20 keynote address at the Government Cloud Computing Summit, Mr. Kundra again highlighted the examples of Recovery.gov and HHS, but he also emphasized the tremendous savings and performance benefits that the Securities and Exchange Commission and the state of Utah have gained using salesforce.com. The afternoon session featured more government success stories from the US Census Bureau, the Department of Defense, and the state governments of Maryland and Colorado.

I invite other federal, state, and local agencies to take inspiration from the success stories Mr. Kundra highlighted.  Cloud computing can dramatically increase returns on government investment in technology by providing secure, reliable, and scalable solutions at a low up-front cost that budget hawks can appreciate.
