Thoughts on SaaS Gov: Government Embraces Cloud Computing Conference - Story From: Recent Ideas

Posted by Stacey Thiell on behalf of Dan Burton

There has been a dramatic shift in government thinking about cloud computing. So much so, that I’m thrilled to be representing salesforce.com this year at the SaaS Gov: Government Embraces Cloud Computing conference. The power, effectiveness, and security of cloud computing are so compelling the U.S. Federal Government has mandated that “all new and existing major investments must review or consider cloud computing options” (to quote Vivek Kundra, the CIO for the US Federal government). The Federal FY 2011 budget says, “Adoption of a cloud computing model is a major part of the strategy to achieve efficient and effective IT.” This is the ideal time for governments everywhere to experience the benefits that leading cloud computing providers can offer in the form of automated and streamlined government processes that can reduce spending on IT. All of this in the cloud, with proven security, scalability, easy customization, quick implementation, low risk, and low up-front cost.

My message is to encourage government agencies to get on the cloud as soon as possible and ride up the experience curve. Here are some recommendations to consider when evaluating how to move your agency to the cloud.

  • Talk to your government peers that use cloud computing. What is their feedback? When you’re talking to vendors, you’ll want to make sure that they have a long list of happy customers. Demos are nice, but they’re not enough. Demand proof. Demand customer references. And when that’s done, ask for more. If the vendor can’t or won’t provide more than one customer reference, pause, acknowledge the red flag, and ask why not. Salesforce.com has more than 72,000 customers, and countless success stories.
  • Target the right projects. Focus on apps that are proven and that meet your agency’s needs. Make sure that the cloud solution integrates with other web apps the same way that salesforce.com integrates with Google, Amazon, Facebook, and Twitter. All clouds are not created equal. Do your research. Scrutinize platforms to see if they are enterprise-proven, provide full performance transparency and surpass industry security standards. Visit www.salesforce.com/trust/ to see how salesforce.com can answer these questions.
  • Once you make your decision, act quickly. Innovation in the cloud moves at startling speed. Agencies need to take a look at how they’re going to harness the power and cost savings of the cloud to make the most impact for their constituents. Given the tremendous flexibility and scalability of cloud computing, you can start small and quickly ramp-up as your understanding grows.

What program, process, or implementation does your agency need right now? The U.S. Census needed to manage its partner relationships for the 2010 Census; New Jersey Transit needed to track transportation services; the U.S. Army needed to track recruiting; and the U.S. Health and Human Services Department needed a project management tool. They all realized success with salesforce.com. What are you waiting for? You can start now with applications for case management, grants management, financial tracking and project management. Or focus on call centers, eGov portals and other applications for engaging and collaborating with constituents. Or tackle data and process-intensive programs that cut across agency and sector boundaries. The key is to find a cloud app that makes sense for you and get on the experience curve so you can cut through the hype and make informed decisions.

Once you’re successful in the cloud, be sure to share your success with others on Apps.gov and the salesforce.com
